Mexico City, Mexico

Spring. Ceremonia.

Mexico City 7/11

So, why was I here? To attend Festival Ceremonia 2019. This is a big music festival that takes place in Toluca, Mexico on an F1 track. Not too far from Mexico City, but you go over some big mountains to get there. They have an elevated train now.

Some of these have some bad sound, either because the music was so loud or because my sleeve was hitting the iPhone. Not sure.

I know my Mexico City pretty well, but this one had some surprises. Firstly:

Almost everyone here was Mexican. So, the first surprise was that they loved Yaeji and knew every song. The video above is Raingurl. The place was so packed I couldn’t get close to the stage. I missed filming the opening song, which was Feel It Out. But, trust me, the place went nuts when she went on stage to that. She changed the best lyric a bit and said “Shit is crazy, this is Yaeji”.

This is the German duo Modeselektor. I managed to plan ahead for this one. I was only a few rows back. I got there early, and the people next to me asked questions, since I was the only gringo around. They got my story, and then offered me weed (I declined). They said “we are from Tijuana”, and then, unprompted, said “it’s all true”. At any rate, Modeselektor had these stereotypically German picky stage managers and sound guys, and it sounded awesome.

Modeselektor then took an unexpected turn by bringing out Flohio for Wealth.

Now for the real reason I was here: Aphex Twin. He had some software running that turned people in the front row of the audience into his face. His set was supposed to end at 2am, but he played until 4am. No further commentary.
